The Airbus A380: The Giant That Refused to Disappear
1. A plane of record-breaking size
Everything about the Airbus A380 is enormous. Its overall length is about 73 metres — roughly as long as the Great Sphinx in Egypt. The full-length double-deck fuselage typically carries around 550 passengers, but in a high-density layout it can hold more than 800 . The tail stands 24 metres high, as tall as a seven-storey building, and the 845 m² wing area is big enough to park dozens of cars .
2. Range, fuel, and efficiency
The A380 can fly up to 15,000 km without refuelling . To do that, it carries roughly 310,000 to 320,000 litres of fuel, giving it a maximum take-off weight of around 560 tonnes . What surprised many people at the time was its efficiency: Airbus claimed the plane would burn only about 3 litres of fuel per passenger per 100 km — comparable to a family car . That was a bold claim for a four-engine giant, and it helped justify the A380’s size in an industry increasingly worried about fuel costs.
3. A European project — with a global footprint
Building the A380 was an extraordinary example of transnational cooperation. The final assembly line was in Toulouse, France, but that was only the end of a very complicated process. The wings were built in England and Wales, the main fuselage sections in Hamburg, Germany, and parts for the nose and tail in Spain before being assembled in Germany and shipped to France .
However, the story went further than Europe. Designers in Wichita, United States, created the wings, and wing panels, wheels, and much of the cockpit electronics were also made in America. In terms of actual cost, almost half of the aircraft was made in the USA.
4. What has changed? The A380 is no longer in production
Here is where the original text needs an important update. Airbus stopped producing the A380 in 2021. The final aircraft was delivered to Emirates on 16 December 2021, after 251 deliveries in total . Airbus had announced the end of the programme in 2019, and the COVID-19 pandemic accelerated the decision .
For a moment, it looked as if the A380 might disappear completely. Many airlines grounded their entire fleets, and some — including Air France, Thai Airways, and Malaysia Airlines — retired the type permanently .
5. The surprising second life
But the A380 did not fade away. In 2026, around 159 to 189 A380s are still in service worldwide, flown by ten airlines, including Emirates, British Airways, Singapore Airlines, Qantas, Etihad, Lufthansa, Qatar Airways, Korean Air, and ANA . Emirates alone operates 116 of them, making it by far the largest operator .
Why did it come back? Long-haul travel recovered faster than airlines expected, and deliveries of new wide-body jets — especially the Boeing 777X — were delayed . Airlines needed capacity on busy routes, and the A380 still had plenty of it. Many of the airframes are relatively young, with some ANA and Emirates aircraft less than a decade old .
6. What comes next?
The A380 will not last forever. Qantas plans to retire its A380s from 2028, and Korean Air aims to phase out the type by 2031 . Emirates expects to keep flying its A380s until around 2040, although the airline is already cannibalising some of its own aircraft to keep the rest of the fleet flying . Airbus itself has no plans to restart production; its focus is now on more efficient twin-engine jets such as the A350 and A330neo .
The A380 was not a commercial success for Airbus — the programme is estimated to have cost the company billions — but it remains a favourite with passengers and a symbol of what aviation can achieve when size and ambition come together .
